The free crochet and knit Smart Yarns Patterns that we have all known and loved are available only through September 1, 2005. So print ‘em, save ‘em, download ‘em… whatever, however… but do it now because time is running out!
And don’t count on the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, because the patterns may not all be available there, and even if they are, not all of the photos and graphs are going to be included.
If you’re like me, you were devastated (okay, maybe that’s a strong word, but still) to find that the Smart Yarns patterns disappeared without warning in April 2005, with nothing left but the following message.
We regret to inform you that Solutia Inc. has exited the Acrylic Fiber business as of April 15, 2005. Due to this decision, the following web sites are no longer in service.
- Acrilan (Home Furnishings, Apparel, Industrial)
- DuraSpun (Socks)
- Piltrol (Sweaters)
- Ginny (Cotton-Like Fiber, Socks, Upholstery)
- SEF Modacrylic Fiber (Apparel, Home Furnishings, Industrial and Specialty Applications)
- The Smart Yarns (Craft Yarns)
Solutia must have been bombarded, because before the end of April, they’d put the patterns back up, but for a limited time only. We were all relieved to see this message!
TheSmartYarns Patterns are back for a limited time. Due to the high volume of calls and emails we received, our knit and crochet patterns will be available until September 1, 2005.
You’ve only got six days to print or save these patterns. Hurry, hurry!

Thank you so much for this news and the links. I have been searching long and late for a crocheted sweater pattern for my size 4 son that doesn’t look hokie or too bulky and found the PERFECT pattern, the Boy’s Geometric Pullover. Kudos! and I enjoy reading your blog.

Wow! And how sad! I’m so glad I learned about the patterns, I’d never heard of them until reading this! I have the ones I want (and others I don’t but you never know, someday I might need them!) all tucked away in a safe spot! :)

Thank you thank you thank you for the reminder! The electronic post-it note I put on my desktop to remind myself to finish saving them has been there so long that it became part of the background and I stopped noticing it…Off to download patterns!

they had some really nice patterns there. i think i found a note about this at crochetville and i ran over to their site right away and PDF’d any and every pattern i thought i might be interested in. it really is a shame they’re gone, but im glad they gave people a warning so we could snag the patterns before they were gone for good. =)
