thrift store finds

I enjoy browsing thrift stores, and I’ve seen some ugly sweaters I’d love to pull apart for the gorgeous and/or fun yarn. I wasn’t corageous enough to try it, though, until I was inspired by Marlo’s prayer pot, which I fell dearly in love with as soon as I saw it.

So, today I stopped by Goodwill to see what I could find. I came out with three sweaters made of unique yarn that would have cost me a bundle if I bought it at a yarn store. The blue one and the pastels one were $3.39 each. They should have been $4.59, but the lady charged me for blouses instead of sweaters. The one in reds and pinks was $2.59 because it was children’s.

This is going to be a fun adventure. I’m not yet sure what I’ll make with the yarn, but I have some ideas. A couple of prayer pots are definitely on my to-do list once Marlo finishes writing up the pattern.

Hi Donna. I’ve had the same desire to pull apart ugly sweaters, but never have. How exactly do you go about doing it? I mean, is there an obvious place to start pulling the sweater apart? I’ve been stalking ebay to try to find some good buys, but nothing could beat the fab thrift store find!

I am going to write up the pattern today for my prayer pot. I hope to have it on my blog today. You will be addicted to unravelling sweaters. I am! I have gotten some gorgeous yarns for just a few dollars. What a bargain!

Kim, I had no clue how to do this, but I’ve started pulling the red one apart and it’s so easy. I took photos while I was doing it, and will post more detail later in my blog. In a nutshell, you gently rip the seams open with a seam ripper (but do not cut the yarn!!), find an end, and start frogging.

Maryse, as I understand it, you write your prayers on little slips of paper and put them inside the pot as a symbolic gesture that you’ve turned them over to God.
