This weekend I received an e-mail from Pier 1 Imports. Nothing unusual about that; I’m on their mailing list by choice because I like to shop there. Anyhow, one of the Featured Items shown in the e-mail was a knit throw. Since I’m a sucker for anything brown, I clicked, and what I saw was that those who don’t do fiber arts will always get them mixed-up, and that’s just life.
We’ve all heard crochet hooks called crochet needles and I’m sure you’ve seen many crocheted garments advertised as hand knit. Apparently it’s no different for weavers, because this woven throw is named Chocolate & Aqua Knit Throw, followed by a description that states it is woven. And the photo clearly shows it is indeed woven. Nothing knit about it.
Now, there are worse things in life than having your craft mistaken for another. And I have to admit I probably wouldn’t know a lithograph print from a giclee one by looking at it. But sometimes I just wanna ask for a little bit of R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

It’s frustrating, isn’t it! Cute throw… wish I could weave. :)
[as for crochet needles -- recent discussion about this on the CGOA mailing list, and reportedly the very early documented crochet history has them called needles instead of hooks.]

Hmm… I’ll concede to history ;), but if one has to dig that far back, you can bet the people who are calling them needles aren’t doing so for historical reasons. They’re not crocheters and simply haven’t bothered to check the terminology for the subject they’re writing about. :)

Hello Donna
I am awfully late but congratulations for the wonderful little one to come !!!
Having a little boy is what has revived my interest in needlecraft years ago! (but in your case that won’t be a requirement obviously !)
Hope you’ll find many cute projects to do.

just kinda rubs the wrong way - doesn’t it?
in this case, my guess is that it is titled ‘knit’ instead of ‘woven’ for the search factor… just a more common term, especially for a throw. it is simply gorgeous! i LOVE pier1 - definitely my favorite place to shop, and ikea oooo love love ikea!

That rubs me the wrong way as well. It seems that knitting gets so much more coverage, recognition and respect than do any other craft out there. Most people consider crochet knit and sometimes I just would wish they wouldn’t say anything at all. Jut this past Saturday I went to a yarn shop where I met a yarn snob that I asked knew anything of crochet. She snobbishly replied “No, oh , no…I just knit. I have always knitted, never crocheted, never”. I just don’t get it. However, the throw is beautiful!!
